Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa




Centurion is situated in South Africa's Gauteng Province. This vibrant town is situated between the major cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Centurion is located at the intersection of the N1 and N14 highways. The R21 also passes through Centurion.

There is never a dull moment in Centurion as there are various entertainment venues, a modern shopping mall, a water park, golf courses and a driving range. The town is conveniently close to the Highveld Techno Park where technology companies such as Siemens Telecommunications, SAAB Grintek Technologies, Telkom and others are located.

This boat offers trips on and across the lake, can be hired for private functions and children's parties

Super Sport Park
The Super Sport Park Cricket Stadium is the home of the Northern Titans Cricket Union, a luxury restaurant and a modern multi-purpose conference hall with equipment to accommodate conferences of approximately 600 people are available.

The Musical Fountain
The water organ is situated in the centre of the lake;   entertainment is presented here at night and over weekends. The water organ with its 600 fountain-jets and 280 c
Coloured lights are something to behold.

Verwoerdburg Lake
The lake is 7,5 ha in size,  and used for a variety of water sport and recreational activities, including canoeing, triathlon, float-building competitions, yachting, model boats and angling. The area below the bridge is very popular for functions and outdoor events.

Zwartkop Nature Reserve
This reserve on the banks of the Hennops River  near Zwartkop, has a variety of bird life while a number of game species have been resettled, including blesbok, springbok, impala, red hartebeest, ostrich and zebra.  Walking trails has been laid out and the flora is marked and identified. A Lapa and Braai (barbeque) facilities are available.

Air Force Memorial
The Air Force Memorial on Bays Hill overlooks the Swartkop Air Force Base. The memorial was opened on 1963.

Irene Camp Cemetery
More than 2000 people were allegedly buried at the camp, although the cemetery's name list only mentions 1 149 names. A name plate with a number of 2 156 was found later, but only 850 graves could be found. For this reason all 1 149 names have been inscribed on the 80 memorial tablets.

Porcinarium
The Animal Improvement Institute of the Agriculture Research Council is situated just outside Irene and houses among other things  one of the world's only (as far as is known) pig museums or porcinarium Schemes. Since its opening the porcinarium has received many visitors, especially from abroad.

Rooihuiskraal Historical Site
The old stone kraal at Rooihuiskraal is rather dilapidated today, but was declared a national monument. A recent addition to the site is the Centurion Battle Tank which was among others used by the British in Korea in 1944. It was later acquired by South Africa, upgraded several times but is now old enough to serve as a museum piece.
The South African Mint
The Mint became a private company in 1988 and produces not only South African coins, but also coins for other countries such as New Zealand, Argentina and Switzerland. A museum, known as Coin World, was opened to the public during 1996 .It also houses a jewelry shop and is open from 09h00 to 15h30, seven days a week. Guided tours are also available, which last approximately two hours
Smuts House
Today it is a museum to commemorate the life of Smuts. The museum and surrounding grounds are open to the public seven days a week. On weekdays the museum can be visited from 9h30 to 13h00 and from 13h30 to 16h30. Guided tours can be arranged by appointment.

Art Gallery
The Art Gallery is situated in Cantonments Road next to the main library.

Hiking Trails
The Hennops River Hiking trail runs between Centurion Park Cricket Stadium and the Zwartkop Nature Reserve and is approximately 13 km long. Booking is not necessary. The route can be started from South Street, Zwartkop Lapa, Lenchen Avenue North and South, as well as the Clubview Shopping Centre.
